Dental Cleanings & Exams

You lead a busy life and need a dental practice that makes it convenient to receive essential care like exams and teeth cleanings. Oriani Cosmetic Dental is a boutique dental practice that takes time to focus on you and your individual needs. We offer cosmetic dentistry and all aspects of general dentistry to help you maintain excellent oral health.

The Importance of Preventive Dentistry

Preventive dental care is crucial because it helps you maintain a healthy smile and minimizes your risk of developing serious oral health issues. With regular exams and teeth cleanings, Dr. Oriani can monitor your oral health and detect and treat problems early on. The result is less need for complex treatment, less time away from work or family life, and lower long-term dental costs.

Numerous scientific studies and research show that oral health plays a significant role in bodily health and well-being. This research shows a link between periodontal infections and disorders like heart disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and dementia, to name just a few.

What's Involved with Routine Exams and Teeth Cleanings?

Dr. O recommends dental exams and hygiene appointments every six months for most patients. If you have a history of cavities or gum disease, more frequent checkups allow us to stay a step ahead of problems that can compromise your oral health.

Dental Exam

We begin your exam with a review of your dental and medical history. Dr. O also encourages you to share your concerns or any symptoms you are experiencing.

A visual exam with an intraoral camera provides a detailed view of your teeth and gums to check for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or other oral health issues. We examine your dental bite and TMJs, check existing dental work and perform an oral cancer screening.

Dr. O typically recommends a full set of x-rays every 3–5 years and checkup x-rays annually to check for hidden issues

Periodontal Examination

This step involves assessing the health of your gums and supporting bone structure called a periodontal probe to measure the depth of gum pockets around each tooth to check for signs of gum disease.

Teeth Cleaning

Dr. O will perform a professional teeth cleaning to remove all plaque and tartar buildup that can lead to cavities and gum disease. The final step is tooth polishing to remove surface stains and leave your mouth with a fresh, clean feeling.

Depending on your risk of tooth decay, Dr. O may recommend a fluoride treatment to help strengthen your teeth and protect against cavities.

Your Personalized Treatment Plan

If Dr. O identifies an issue during your examination, she will review it with you and provide treatment recommendations. She will work closely with you to develop a treatment tailored to your needs and schedule future appointments.

Dr. O and her team take excellent care of their patients

Dr. O and her team take excellent care of their patients. They are knowledgeable and up to date with all the latest technology without pushing things that you don’t really need (which is more than I can say for some dentists). When I had an urgent dental need they got me in to see the dentist the same day and Dr. O and her team followed up with me to see how I was doing. You will enjoy the personal touch you’ll experience at this practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Preventing cavities and gum disease is much easier than you might think. Following the simple steps outlined below, you can minimize your risk for these and other issues and maintain a healthy smile.

Brush and Floss Consistently

Brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing once helps remove plaque and bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. Be sure to use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid damaging the teeth and gums. If you need oral hygiene tips, we would be happy to help you.

Routine Exams and Teeth Cleanings

Visiting us regularly for teeth cleanings allow us to remove plaque and tartar buildup and minimize your risk for cavities and gum disease. We can also identify and address dental problems early before they become more serious.

Eat a Healthy Diet

A diet high in sugar and carbohydrates contributes to the development of cavities and gum disease. Eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, and lean protein helps maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Limit Sugary and Acidic Drinks

Sugary and acidic drinks, such as soda, energy drinks, and citrus juices, can erode tooth enamel and increase your risk of cavities. Limit your intake of these drinks, and drink plenty of water to help rinse away food particles and bacteria.

Intraoral Cameras

An intraoral camera is a small, handheld device that gives us a magnified image of the inside of your mouth. The device has a digital camera and light source that captures clear images, which appear in real-time on a computer screen or television monitor.

Our dentist shares the images with you so you can better understand your oral health needs and be more involved in your treatment.

Other benefits of intraoral cameras include the following:

  • Helping us detect cavities, cracked teeth, and gum disease early on when they are easier to treat
  • Providing a detailed visual record of your dental condition needed for diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Showing you detailed "before and after" images of your dental work

We store your intraoral images in your digital patient record, so they are always available to monitor your oral health and send to specialists and your insurance company.
